My husband has been self-employed for about twenty years. During that time we have used a high deductible plan ($7,500 back in the beginning up to $14,000 just a few years back). We maxed out our pre-tax health savings account deposits every year. In spite of paying for children’s braces, years of routine medical care, one ER visit and a relatively minor surgery, today we have in excess of $100k left in the HSA. That is money that now acts like an IRA at our age.
The key to this game plan is researching and negotiating costs as well as being proactive in terms of healthcare. When my hubby needed a holter monitor I prearranged a discounted rate. Prior to a surgery I got a “pay in full” price AND when we received an ER bill I called and asked for the same “pay in full” price. In every case, we were granted at LEAST a 40% discount. We’re were able to pay in full because we’d been depositing the savings from the high deductible insurance into the HSA so we had the money available. To be fair, this is no different than any other aspect of our lives. We all get quotes for home and auto repairs...right?
Several years ago I broke my hand. I told the doc I was cash pay. He took two X-rays, splinted it and wrote $175 on the ticket for the office to charge me... “Wear the splint for six weeks. Unless you have a problem, I don’t need to see you again.” BAM that’s the way I want my health care... no BS... JUST COMMON SENSE. From prior personal experience, this same doc would X-ray, remove and replace a cast every two weeks WITH GENEROUS INSURANCE. Later, when I needed a ultrasound mammogram I shopped until I found a diagnostic center that performed it for $125 vs the $1200 the hospital mammography center wanted.
To be fair, we are healthy and fit 63 year olds. We take no prescription meds. But maybe that’s because we have taken responsibility to maintain our health the same way we are responsible to maintain our home and vehicles.
Today we use a “health share” plan that has a much lower “share” (deductible). I assume it will be there when we need it but even if it is problematic, we have $100k saved to cover potential expenses...that $100k AND MORE would have gone to premiums if we’d used a low deductible plan with a copay. There are “fixes”, even outright solutions, if folks would wake up. I just don’t see it happening anytime soon.
